With the new NFL season set to kick off tomorrow (7 September,) the News & Insights team sat down with Kambi’s Head of NFL pre-match David Ball to discuss the latest betting trends and product enhancements

Q: What makes the NFL such an important competition for betting, and how has it grown since the repeal of PASPA?

A: The NFL is dominant in the US sporting calendar and the Super Bowl goes beyond sports with its place in US culture. With such focus, you need a great NFL product to be successful in sports betting in the US. Each season since PASPA was repealed, more and more states have opened up. This brings expectations for continual improvement with our technology and trading capabilities. It also means taking wagers in many areas with local NFL teams, and as such having an exhaustive offering for their games.

Q: Who are the Super Bowl favourites as we prepare for the new season? Could any underdogs spring a surprise?

A: The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are favoured to meet for a rematch after the close fought Super Bowl earlier this year. Whilst they both look impressive on paper, so much can change between now and the playoffs. 39 year old Aaron Rodgers will play his first season outside Green Bay and has the potential to take a talented young New York Jets team on a postseason run. In the NFC, the Detroit Lions are a popular outside pick to challenge Philadelphia. They finished strongly last season, building hope of ending a barren run without a playoff win since 1991.

Q: Which players should we be keeping an eye out for, and who were the most noteworthy picks from the 2023 Draft?

A: Every year seems to be bring a new young Quarterback that ascends to superstar status – see Jalen Hurts last season. Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence looks to be heading that way and fellow 3rd year starter Justin Fields could make the leap, after his Chicago Bears made some big moves in free agency. From this year’s draft, 8th overall pick Bijan Robinson is a sought after talent for fantasy players. Big things are expected after the Texas Longhorns Running Back landed with the run heavy Atlanta Falcons. After picking 2nd and 3rd in the Draft, Houston Texans will hope that their new QB C.J. Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson can turn their fortunes around.

Q: What can Kambi’s partners expect from our NFL product in 23/24 as the opening fixture approaches?

A: Pre-game, partners can expect significantly more player prop lines than before, with updates to our NFL model allowing us to offer alternate lines for existing props. The strength of our pricing capabilities means we will deliver a vast offering, without the need to hide behind low payback and props where only one side is offered. In-game, expect major strides with our in-play combinability. We achieved a big first in the playoffs by offering in-event combinations for moneylines, spread and totals. In preparation for the new season, focus has been on doing the same with live player props and we will be increasing this offering as the season progresses.
